  • A doctor conducted an experiment about the effects of wearing different types of masks to our bodies.
  • The experiment was done to answer the complaints about the sudden dropping of oxygen as well as the re-inhaling of carbon dioxide.

Coping up with what we have left before the spread of coronavirus, it is quite tempting to set aside all the safety precautions and just continue doing what we do with our daily lives just like what we’ve used to back then. However, the world is now going through such a drastic change afar from usual and we really have no choice but to go along with it.

Currently, for those who don’t like wearing masks for some reasons like, “the threat is over”, or a mask doesn’t actually provide protection against the virus and the common line “I can’t breathe well every time I wear a mask”, a doctor has the answers.

5 minutes breathing test for each mask

Doctor Megan has steered a test by wearing 4 types of masks for 5 minutes straight to see how these masks can affect her heart rate and oxygen levels. On June 22, 2020, Dr. Megan posted on her Facebook account about the results of the said experiment.

She also stated that the experiment was done to give answers to the objections associating the wearing of masks.

Dr. Megan said as she was pertaining to the “oxygen dropping” and “re-inhaling of carbon dioxide” theory.

Wear mask correctly to avoid virus

If you really believe the virus is penetrating the mask and you’re breathing it in, how do you believe your exhaled CO2 is getting stuck?

She told the netizens that viruses need a vector to spread, the vector of COVID-19 is the respiratory droplets. These droplets are not readily passing through a correctly worn mask, and so Dr. Megan did a little experiment.

Dr. Hall simulated herself in four scenarios. She wore each of the masks for 5 minutes straight. After every session, she checked her oxygen capacity along with her heart rate (beats per minute) using noninvasive pulse oximetry. She reminded a pointer to her readers that immediately prior to the experiment, she had been wearing the surgical mask for 5 hours.

According to the test results, when she did not wear a mask, her oxygen saturation is 98% with a heart rate of 64 When she wore a surgical mask, her oxygen saturation stayed the same at 98% but her heart rate slightly increased to 68. After wearing the N95 mask, her oxygen saturation slightly increased to 99% and heart rate also increased to 69.

Lastly, she decided to test the N95 mask, combined with a surgical mask, which is how most healthcare providers use. Her oxygen saturation as well as her heart rate retained at 99% and 69 HR.

Protect yourself from unseen enemies. WEAR MASK.

She then concluded that there is no significant change in the oxygen saturation or HR in any scenario. Although it may be inconvenient for some people, they can still breathe even when they wear a mask.

As a physician, I urge you and ask you to please wear a mask to protect yourself and those who cannot safely wear a mask

She said as she was referring to babies under two years of age.
